After concluding his 30-year surfing career, Hussain Areef (Ibu), the nation's most accomplished surfer, has transitioned into the role of head coach for the national team.

Ibu, who started surfing at the age of 17, officially retired in December, and he has now been appointed as the head coach of the national team by the Surfing Association.

The agreement, spanning one year, marks the next chapter for Ibu, an eight-time national champion, following his extensive and successful surfing career.

"I started my surfing journey at 17, concluding my career after an extensive period, and now, all I aspire to do is impart the knowledge I've gained to upcoming surfers and provide them with training. This opportunity allows me to do just that," expressed Ibu, a two-time bronze medallist at the Asian Surfing Championships.

"In the initial stages, we didn't have access to professional coaching sessions. We learned a great deal by seeking guidance from professional surfers engaged in international competitions, engaging in self-observation and research, and participating in training sessions conducted by various foreign coaches," explained Ibu.

"We aim to provide consistent coaching for the upcoming surfers. They deserve to be trained with proper coaching, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it," expressed Ibu.

Born in R. Rasmaadhoo, Ibu comes from a family with a deep love for surfing. His younger brother, Abdullah Areef (Fuku), is an accomplished surfer. Son of former Bodyboarding Association President Fuku, Kayan Abdulla Areef, is a member of the junior surfing team representing the Maldives.

Both the senior surfing team and the junior surfing team will train under Ibu.
