Men’s team win silver at the Asian Surfing Championship

The Maldives men's team secured a silver medal at the ASF Asian Championship, which concluded on Tuesday, July 18, held at Kaafu Atoll Thulusdhoo.

The Maldives men's team secured a silver medal at the ASF Asian Championship, which concluded on Tuesday, July 18, held at Kaafu Atoll Thulusdhoo.

Maldives managed to secure their second rank after beating Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and even India at the Surfing Championship. While Lanka came in fourth, India secured third spot and Bangladesh ranked 11th.

A total of eight Maldivian athletes competed in both the Men's Open Division and Junior Division at the tournament. Among the team, Hussain Areef (Iboo), renowned as one of the most talented local surfers, secured a bronze medal in the Men's Open Division.

From the Maldives team, Ismail Miglal (Kuda Isse) progressed to the sixth repechage round, while Ahmed Agil (Ammadey) secured fifth in the same heat. Moreover, four other surfers, namely Adam Mueen Ibrahim, Hoodh Ahmed (Hoobz), Hassan Nasih (Chika), and Abdulla Areek (Fukoo), advanced to the fourth repechage round. Jailam Nizar concluded the tournament with his final bout in the third repechage round.

From the Junior Division athletes, Yaseen Ahmed Nashid and Sayyid Salahuddin advanced the furthest, and competed in the third repechage round. Mohamed Inan Abdul Hannan, Shanif Shafeeq, and Yoosuf Kayan Hamdhan Zaki competed in the second repechage round, while Ismail Madhuhu Ahmed, Mohamed Zayan, and Kayan Abdulla Areef participated in the first repechage round.

The Maldivian team competed and achieved a bronze medal in the team event "Aloha Cup".

In the overall tournament, Maldives secured a silver medal, with Japan emerging as the champions. The Maldivian team's athletes achieved second and fourth places in the Open Division, while the Junior Division athletes were the sole members of the team who advanced to the final rounds in their respective category.

The Maldives women's division team attained the seventh rank in the event. Mariyam Rahil Naseem (Aaya), the sole Maldivian female surfer, competed in the second repechage round. In the women's division, Japan claimed the top spot, with China securing second place and Thailand ranking third.
