Free Quran memorization classes for young children, conducted by local NGO Al Asr in collaboration with the Housing Development Corporation, has commenced today.

The agreement to conduct free Quran memorization classes was signed in September last year between Al Asr and HDC.

With enrollment opened in February, 103 children aged between 7 and 10 years have signed up for the classes, HDC said.

The classes are to be held at various mosques in Hulhumale', and sessions will be gender-segregated, HDC said.

Al Asr is responsible for assigning teachers and conducting classes.

The program falls under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's initiative to increase free Quran lessons across the country, according to HDC.

The latest data released by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs shows that, at present, there are 301 huffaz in the country, of which 162 are male, and 139, female. An additional 1,800 individuals are currently enrolled in hifz (Quran memorization) classes.

The Islamic Ministry announced that it aims to increase the number of huffaz in Maldives to 500 before the end of the current term.
