Construction of parking building begins

The government has started the project to build parking buildings in Male'.

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen laid the foundation stone for the project at Hulhumale', which was awarded to Batch Construction Pvt Ltd.

While speaking during the ceremony, Minister Ameen said that the project will bring about positive changes regarding the parking issues on the road and the inability in acquiring garages for the registration of four-wheeled vehicles.

The minister said that four parking buildings will be constructed across Hulhumale' Phase 1, Hulhumale' Phase 2 and Hulhumale' Phase 3 under the private sector initiative.

Batch Construction is to build the 13-storey parking structure at Hulhumale' Phase 1. More than 500 parking spots for two-wheeled vehicles and more than 800 parking spots for four-wheeled vehicles will be included. This is the largest of the four parking buildings that will be built there.

The projects are set to finish in the next 24 months.

According to Minister Ameen, the newly constructed parking buildings will be state of the art. The minister also said that the projects to build the other six parking structures will be awarded to six Maldivian companies.

"When this project comes to an end, the roads in Male' will be more peaceful, with registration issues being solved as well," said Ameen.

The buildings that will be constructed will be able to accommodate 2,600 four-wheeled vehicles and 1,000 two-wheeled vehicles.

As per Batch Construction, the parking structures will be built in accordance to the codes followed by other countries. Priority will be placed on traffic flow and will include a commercial space, stated Batch Construction.
