The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has launched a study into introducing environmentally friendly, renewable energy based transport services.
In a statement published on its website, the ministry said transport remains the backbone of the Maldives’ economic and social development.
As an island nation, the ministry noted the importance of maintaining a reliable system to move people and goods between islands to meet basic needs. It said the rollout of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system has significantly improved connectivity.
The ministry also highlighted ongoing airport development projects across the country as a key step in strengthening air connectivity between islands.
However, it said fluctuations in fuel prices and the growing impact of climate change remain major challenges facing the transport sector.
“To address these issues, the government is studying the introduction of environmentally friendly, renewable energy transport services,” the ministry said.
It added that the long term goal is to connect the entire country through an integrated transport network, enabling more accessible and affordable services for the public.
The ministry said infrastructure development projects will continue in support of this objective.
