An agreement has been signed to establish a yellowfin tuna processing and export facility in Addu City.

The facility is to be developed under an agreement with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to upgrade Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company's (MIFCO) infrastructure.

MIFCO signed three agreements with CMEC yesterday, one of which focuses on increasing fish purchase and storage capacity at the Addu Fisheries Complex and to develop a frozen yellowfin tuna processing and export facility in Addu.

Further agreements concern the development of a center in Th. Hirilandhoo for cold storage and blast freezing, and to upgrade the project in GDh. Thinadhoo for fish purchase and cold storage.

MIFCO said that the agreements aim to advance the company's cold storage and processing and export capacities.

MIFCO said that these projects would further contribute to efforts of sustainable development in the fisheries industry, and to increase exports of value added products.
