An MDP MP has submitted a reform to the Pension Act to Parliament in order for the terminally ill to receive their pensions earlier than the current 65 years of age.
North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) made the submission in order to bring changes in making claim procedures easier, along with opening the path to receiving pensions at an earlier date.
Ibrahim stated that he submitted the reform so that people could get their pensions without the need for a medical certificate that states they have a terminal illness, their proof of age and how long they had worked for.
As per the reform, a team of medical specialists that will be formed by the Pension Office will be in charge of diagnosing and assessing the condition of such patients.
The reform also requires the pension to be given to the individual within 30 days of requesting it.
Ibrahim highlighted that one of the shortcomings of the current law is that there are no clear articles pertaining to those who are suffering from terminal illnesses.
As per Ibrahim, there is no system that allows for early access to pensions that is based on a medical prognosis. He went on to say that due to this void, the families of the terminally ill have to shoulder financial and psychological burdens.
