High Court Justice Mohamed Niyaz has been elected as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The post fell vacant when Justice Husnu Suood assumed the role of the Supreme Court's representative at the JSC, succeeding Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed.

Justice Niyaz was elected as the Vice President of the JSC through a vote among the members of the commission.

JSC laws require membership of a judge other than the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who is themself a member of JSC. Justice Shujoon was appointed to the post in December 2019. Her term expires later this year.

However, it is unclear whether the Supreme Court's decision to appoint Justice HusnuSuood to replace Justice Shujoon was made after Justice Shujoon's dismissal or resignation from JSC.
