Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has stated today that the previous government had pardoned and released a total of 314 convicted drug traffickers who had been serving life sentences.
In a press conference held today, the Minister revealed that this number was a large percentage out of the total number of convicts serving life sentences.
"In the past five years, from those sentenced for life, from those serving life sentences after being convicted for drug trafficking, 314 of these individuals have been pardoned within the preceding five years," Minister Ihusan stated.
Raising concerns about the granting of pardons to individuals convicted of serious crimes such as this, the Minister highlighted that a person would come to be passed a life sentence against after a thorough investigation has been conducted by the Police through which irrefutable evidence has been gathered against the individual.
Ihusan further noted that there is a higher chance of repeat offences from such perpetrators of crime.
