Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Secretary General Mohamed Tholal has resigned from the party following his appointment as Commissioner of Sports by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday.
Following enquiries from Mihaaru regarding Tholal's responsibilities following former President Abdulla Yameen's controversial establishment of a temporary committee to run the party, a senior official of PPM informed the news outlet that Tholal had voluntarily resigned from the party through requesting the dismissal from the Elections Commission.
The official said that Tholal had handed in his resignation as he is assuming a position in the current administration that would prevent him from remaining in his previous position at PPM.
The law stipulates that the Commissioner of Sports cannot be registered to any political party.
Members of the PPM steering committee appointed by Yameen also stated on Tuesday night that Tholal has refused responsibility for running the party.
Tholal denied this statement made by member Abbas Adil Riza.
He resigned from PPM prior to his appointment as Sports Commissioner. He has previously served as the President of the Athletics Association.
