A Bangladeshi man has been remanded for 30-days by the Criminal Court after he was arrested for sexually abusing a minor inside a mosque in Malé.

According to the police, the man was arrested last Tuesday. He works at the Jalaluddin Mosque on Chaandhanee Magu, where the incident occurred. The victim is a 10-year-old boy.

The victim frequented this mosque for daily prayers, so the abuse has reportedly been continuing for some time.

When the allegation surfaced earlier in the week, a mob had attacked him; when the situation escalated and got violent, he was taken to the police by another group of people.

He remains in police custody while the investigation into the allegation continues.
