Scholarships open for master's study under Japanese grant

Application for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS), a scholarship programmed offered by Japan, has been opened to Maldivians.

Application for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS), a scholarship programmed offered by Japan, has been opened to Maldivians.

The JDS aims to provide master's degree education to employees of various state agencies to help further develop the human resource required for government administration and to ensure that these employees are fully involved in the formulation of the socio-economic development plans of the country and will be at the forefront of national development.

The scholarship, which was started by the Japanese government in 2020, has so far sent 16 Maldivians students to Japan to study, while seven students have successfully completed their studies and returned home.

Under this scholarship, six applicants are given an opportunity annually. Only two people from each university will be eligible for the scholarship. In addition to all the study and travel expenses, the Japanese government will also provide all the expenses of living and returning to the country in Japan.

Under the scholarship, master's degrees are offered by the University of Tsukuba in the Masters Programme in Environmental Sciences and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Masters of Public Policy or Public Administration. Students can also pursue masters of arts in international relations from Ritsumeikan University.

Those who wish to apply for the scholarship can apply online till December 3.

Only Maldivians are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Candidates who have attained the age of 22 years and have not reached the age of 39 years as on April 1, 2024, can apply. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree recognized by Maldivian government, and be permanent employees in either the civil service or one of the independent bodies, or the courts, and fields related to the court. Additionally, they should have work experience of two years, and must be full time employees when applying.

The JDS will organise promotion seminars for the applicants. The seminars will provide participants with detailed information about the scholarship, how to prepare application documents, and information about submission of applications.

Applicants can apply for the scholarship till 4 pm on December 3. More information about the scholarship can be found on the JDS website.
